A way of connecting parts that puts them under stress or that official sets do not use.
An illegal technique is a connection that official set designers avoid, usually because it bends or stresses the parts or does not hold reliably. Wedging a plate between studs is a classic example. Nothing about it is unlawful; the word only means it would not pass in an official set. Stressed parts can develop stress marks.
